Anyone searching for a stainless steel garden shower has usually already been through another one: a plastic model that faded after two summers, or an aluminium one where the coating flaked off at the edges. The second time round, it should be something that lasts.
In this article we look at why the material matters more for a garden shower than for almost any other piece of garden equipment, what separates 304 from 316 stainless steel, what two millimetres of wall thickness mean in practice and how stainless steel gets on with a wood fire.
Why the material matters more than the design for a garden shower
A garden shower has the toughest job in the whole garden. It stands outside all year, takes rain, frost, UV light and condensation, and on top of that it has to cope with something no other piece of garden furniture does: it is constantly wet on the inside as well. Water runs through pipes, sits in valves and drips along joints.
These are exactly the places where lifespan is decided. A coating that cracks at an edge lets water underneath, and from then on corrosion works from the inside. A plastic that goes brittle under UV light splits at the first frost. What looked good at the start becomes a maintenance job after a few seasons. A material that needs no protective layer does not have this problem.
Stainless steel, aluminium or plastic: the honest comparison
The three common materials at a glance:
- Plastic: cheap and light, but UV-sensitive. Fades, goes brittle and usually survives only one or two winters of frost. On solar showers with a tank, the tank is an extra weak point.
- Aluminium: light and rust-free, but soft. Dents stay, and the powder coating meant to protect the metal from the weather flakes off at edges and drill holes. White rust sets in underneath.
- Stainless steel: heavier and more expensive, but permanently weatherproof without any coating. Does not warp, fade or rust, and can be welded cleanly so there are no seams where water can sit.
The difference does not show in the first year but in the fifth. A stainless steel shower still looks like day one. The other two will need either maintenance or replacement by then.
304 or 316: which stainless steel belongs in the garden
Not all stainless steel is the same. The two grades you find outdoors are 304 (V2A, material number 1.4301) and 316 (V4A, 1.4404). Grade 316 contains additional molybdenum, which makes it especially resistant to chlorides, meaning salt water, sea air and heavily chlorinated pool water.
For a garden shower running on ordinary mains water, 304 is the right choice: weatherproof, food-safe and rust-free for decades. That is why the Feuerwasser outdoor shower is made from 304. Two millimetres of wall thickness: what solid really means
Many stainless steel showers are made of thin sheet bent around a tube. That is enough for a cold-water shower with no technology inside. In the Feuerwasser outdoor shower, the tube contains a flow heater with combustion chamber, heat exchanger and valves, and that needs substance.
The body is made of 2 mm 304 stainless steel, 255 cm tall, 30 cm wide and 55 cm deep. That is enough for the shower not to wobble in the wind, for the welds to stay tight permanently and for the heat of the fire not to warp the material. It is also the reason we give five years warranty on the stainless steel.
The shower is delivered in three modules: base, flow heater and flue. They screw into each other, the garden hose clicks on, done. If you do not want to mount it permanently, the optional slab stand is weighted down with paving slabs.
Hygiene: why flow-through beats a tank
Besides the outer skin, what happens inside counts too. Solar and tank showers hold twenty to forty litres of water that sits in the sun all day. Warm, standing water in a plastic tank is the ideal place for germs and biofilm. Showering with it does not rinse you clean, rather the opposite.
The Feuerwasser outdoor shower has no tank. The system holds around 6.5 litres of water in constant flow, replenished fresh from the mains as it is heated. After showering, everything drains via the red lever. Nothing is left standing that could breed germs or freeze in winter. And the smooth, pore-free stainless steel surface gives deposits no hold, inside or out.
Stainless steel and fire: how the wood-fired heater works
The outdoor shower produces its warm water with a patented wood-fired flow heater, without any electricity or gas. The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water, and a four-stage heat exchanger transfers the heat of the fire directly to the water flowing through. Around five minutes after lighting, the water is warm, and the temperature is set at the mixing valve like a shower indoors.
Fire and stainless steel going together is no coincidence. Stainless steel withstands the temperatures in the combustion chamber without warping and passes the heat reliably on to the water. Where the material gets hot, a precisely fitted aluminium heat shield surrounds the flue so nobody accidentally touches a hot surface. A thermal drain valve and a pressure relief valve secure the system further, and both work purely mechanically.
Care: how much work stainless steel needs in the garden
Very little. Stainless steel needs no paint, no oil and no sealant. A damp cloth after showering is enough to avoid water marks. If you run the shower on hard water, wipe it down occasionally with a little diluted vinegar.
The one thing worth knowing about is surface rust: if iron particles land on the surface from outside, for example from angle grinding nearby or a steel brush, they can rust there. This is not the stainless steel itself rusting and comes off with a stainless steel cleaner.
