Most garden showers make their last appearance in October. They get unscrewed, drained, carried to the basement and put back up in May. Anyone looking for a winter garden shower wants the exact opposite: a shower that stays where it is when the first frost arrives and delivers water just as warm in January as it does in July.

What frost-proof really means for a garden shower
Frost is dangerous for a garden shower for one simple reason: water expands by around nine percent when it freezes. If it is left sitting in a pipe, a valve or a tank, the ice pushes against the material from the inside. Plastic pipes split, valves start leaking, and a tank develops hairline cracks that you only notice in spring when you fill it for the first time.
So frost-proof does not mean a shower is particularly well insulated. It means that no water remains in the system after showering that could freeze. A shower that drains completely in a few seconds can stand outside at any temperature. A shower that keeps a little water somewhere cannot, no matter how sturdily it is built.
The second point is the material itself. A frame made of painted aluminium or plastic visibly suffers from frost, condensation and UV light. Stainless steel does not. It could not care less whether it stands in snow at minus fifteen or in the August sun.
The red lever: how the outdoor shower becomes frost-proof in seconds
In the Feuerwasser outdoor shower, water does not sit in a tank. It flows continuously through the wood-fired heater. The whole system holds only around 6.5 litres of water, and that is exactly what you can get rid of with one movement.
At the bottom of the shower sits a red lever. Open it after showering and all internal pipes, the heat exchanger and the valves drain by themselves. No water is left behind that could freeze. After that, the shower can stay outside at any temperature, with no cover, no frost guard and no dismantling in autumn.
The lever has a second job too: when filling, it is used for bleeding the system. You open it until the water runs out without air bubbles, then close it again. Only then do you light the fire. This one movement replaces everything other showers need antifreeze, insulated hoses or basement space for.
Why solar showers and tank showers fail in winter
The classic garden shower is the solar shower with a black tank. It works reasonably well in high summer, but in winter it fails for two reasons at once. First, there is no sun: with a low winter sun and few hours of daylight, the tank does not even get lukewarm. Second, the tank itself is the problem. Twenty to forty litres of standing water freeze into a block of ice, and the plastic usually survives that only once.
Electric garden showers need a frost-proof power supply and use a lot of energy in winter because the water comes out of the mains much colder. A simple cold-water shower is frost-proof as soon as you remove the hose, but it is simply not usable in winter.
What remains is a shower that produces its warm water independently of sunshine and sockets and is empty after use.
Warm water below freezing: the wood-fired flow heater
The heart of the outdoor shower is a patented wood-fired flow heater. The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water and fitted with a four-stage heat exchanger. Water from the garden hose flows through this system, takes up the heat of the fire directly and arrives warm at the shower head. No tank is needed for this.
Around five minutes after lighting, the water is up to temperature. And because a wood fire burns at minus ten just as it does at plus twenty, the season changes nothing. In winter it takes a few minutes longer because the mains water is colder, and a few extra logs take care of that.
You set the temperature at the mixing valve, just like a shower indoors: the hot water from the heater is blended directly with cold water. Two safety mechanisms run in the background. A thermal drain valve stops the system from overheating, and a pressure relief valve protects against excessive mains pressure. Both work without electricity and without electronics that could fail in the cold.
Showering in winter: how it works in practice
A winter shower differs from a summer one in only a few details. The sequence stays the same:
- Connect the water: attach the garden hose via the click coupling and open the supply fully. The shower needs two to four bar of water pressure.
- Bleed the system: open the red lever until the water runs bubble-free, then close it.
- Light the fire: fill the combustion chamber with finely split, dry softwood and light it. After about five minutes the water is warm.
- Shower: set the temperature at the dial, open the valve and enjoy. The contrast between cold air and warm water is what makes winter showering special.
- Drain: once there are no embers left in the chamber, turn off the water, remove the hose and open the red lever. Done.
Two extra points apply in winter. The garden hose must be drained after showering and stored frost-free, and the outdoor tap needs a frost-proof fitting or must be shut off from inside before the first frost. And: never disconnect the water supply while there is still fire or embers in the combustion chamber. The system must stay under water pressure until everything has burned down, otherwise the valves can be damaged.
Winter is the season: the shower next to sauna and hot tub
For many of our customers, the outdoor shower matters even more in winter than in summer. If you have a garden sauna, you need exactly two things after a session: a short cold rinse and then warm water to wash off. The shower delivers both right next to the sauna door, and nobody has to walk through the house with wet feet.
